A Brush of Darkness + Interview + Giveaway!

Today is the day! Allison Pang's debut urban fantasy, A Brush of Darkness, is officially out! I was able to read an ARC of this book (which I ended up quoting b/c I absolutely fell in love with this book -- if you can't tell, LOL). Allison twisted faerie lore into something really unique. It hit all the right notes for this reader.

Six months ago, Abby Sinclair was struggling to pick up the pieces of her shattered life. Now, she has an enchanted iPod, a miniature unicorn living in her underwear drawer, and a magical marketplace to manage. But despite her growing knowledge of the OtherWorld, Abby isn’t at all prepared for Brystion, the dark, mysterious, and sexy-as- sin incubus searching for his sister, convinced Abby has the key to the succubus’s whereabouts. Abby has enough problems without having this seductive shape-shifter literally invade her dreams to get information. But when her Faery boss and some of her friends vanish, as well, Abby and Brystion must form an uneasy alliance. As she is sucked deeper and deeper into this perilous world of faeries, angels, and daemons, Abby realizes her life is in as much danger as her heart—and there’s no one she can trust to save her.

I also had the chance to meet Allison at the RWA National Conference in Orlando last year. Not only is her book great, but she's a really cool person, too.

So, I sent her a few questions. Yanno, so we can get a peek into this debut author's mind. These are some very important (*cough*) questions. :D Hope you enjoy!

Kelly: You're a kick ass UF heroine -- what is your weapon of choice? (And because this is very important), what is your hairstyle of choice?

Allison: Well, I have the perfect solution to both.
It’s made out of composite nylon and plastic so it will go through metal detectors. It’s not actually a dagger, but could easily be used to puncture someone (those pesky vampires I’d be fighting? Note the nice blood channels grooved into the sides.) So, it would be great for when I went clubbing and had to take care of the undead up close and personal. When I’m done and cleaning up, I can use the hairbrush to fix my hair. And for practical reasons, short hair is probably the best.

Kelly: What was your favorite fairytale, book, fable growing up?

Allison: The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle. If it wasn’t the book, it would have been the movie (which I recorded onto audio tape when I was in 2nd grade and listened to every night before I went to bed. Obsessive? No, not at all.)

Kelly: If you could visit any fictional world, which would it be and why?

Allison: I honestly don't know. I love so many of them that I don't think I can pick. Might be kinda awesome to visit the world of Anne Bishop's Black Jewels, though.

Kelly: Favorite thing to dip your fries in?

Allison: Honey Mustard

Kelly: Beach or Mountains?

Allison: Beach

Kelly: Pencil or Pen?

Allison: Pen

Kelly: Besides writing do you have any other creative loves or endeavors?

Allison: Cross-stitching. Love to do it, but I have so little time to do it these days. I also collect Japanese anime cels, mostly from Fushigi Yugi, Vampire Hunter D and Ayashi no Ceres. (It’s an expensive hobby, though, so I don’t get to do it as much as I’d like.)

Kelly: One thing readers would be surprised to know about you?

Allison: Hmmm. I hate seafood. And pie. Also? I actually own one of those hairbrush daggers.

Kelly: Any other projects in the works?

Allison: The second and third books in the BoD series (which should both be out some time next year). Otherwise I’m working on an epic fantasy and a steampunk fantasy thing. (In my spare time. Hah)

My daughter loved The Last Unicorn movie when she was about 5-ish. I think I am going to buy it on DVD for her. It brings back some nice memories .
My weapon of choice would have to be a sword. You don't want to get to close to the big bads when you kill them .

I have to say my weapon of choice is a Silver Dagger. You never know when a werewolf is going to jump out and attack you.

I'm a big Anne Bishop fan. Can't wait for Twilight's Dawn to come out.

Does the fact that I haven't finished a small cross stitch project in four years mean I can't list it as a hobby anymore?

Congrats on the book release.

Well, you can't go wrong with a nice wooden stake. And with two stakes, you have insta-cross! Exactly what every moster hunter needs. Dip the tips in silver and your covered for werewolves, too. :-)

Oh, the spelling errors! MONSTER and YOU'RE. Sheesh.

very nice interview...i like her already because we share a dislike of seafood and love the beach. can't wait to read this book. my weapon of choice would be...a crossbow, it's huge (no sneaking around with it) but if you know how to use one it shows you mean business.

I like that weapon. Personally I think I would choose a crossbow with a trigger. Great interview, congrats on the release! Looking forward to checking it out.

It is so uber embarrassing to admit this but I was part of a urban fantasy play-by-post RPG (Allison would know what that is) years ago where my character's weapon of choice was a scythe. So she could lop off heads. I found it exceptionally unwieldy to write but the image was always kind of cool in my mind. Less Grim Reaper and more Brad Pitt in Interview With the Vampire. lol

Happy Debut Day Allison! :)

oh we share a dislike of seafood! And my weapon of choice would a dagger, easy to use.

I'd have to go with a crossbow as my choice! Enjoyed the interview and sounds like my kind of read.

The hairbrush dagger is pretty awesome. If I were a UF heroine, though, I think I'd go with swords or an M16 or something else that's really intimidating and would make people not want to mess with me.

Thanks for the giveaway!

Toiletry bottles filled with various liquids, like holy water, acids, and flammable substances. Easy to get through security, and if you get arrested, none of that would seem too suspicious. Unless the cops were smart enough to test the contents. LOL.

I'd go with gun with silver bullets.

Stephanie M said...

I would go with a sword. I have the worst aim with guns (BB).

As for the weapon. Oh that brush is hard to surpass. I think tho... I'll go with the sais. Oh, and the skill set to use it. :)

If it's open worldwide then I am in :D

Hm, weapon, I am such a chicken, I would like a sniper rifle and hide somewhere. So as my weapon I am gonna choose a big hunky alpha who does the fighting for me ;)

Totally would be a samurai sword with a purple case thingy...I think I watch too many martial arts films:) The hairbrush idea is very cool, I always have a brush on me so would be so convenient

my weapon of choice......a whip, yes a whip like the one Indiana Jones uses in his movies

Cindy McCune said...

I guess this would be a weapon of defence: a bracelet that could morph into a shield! You can make anything into a weapon....but to do so you must have an edge.

As soon as I first heard about A Brush of Darkness I put it on my wish list, it sounds like such a great book. My weapon of choice would be a number silver throwing knives that I concealed about my person.

I'm really looking forward to this book. My weapon of choice would be a boring old gun. I don't think I could get up close and messy and go lobbing off body parts.

Awesome interview. That hairbrush dagger is the coolest thing ever. And yay cross stitch!

I think my weapon of choice would probably be a baseball bat since I'd want to wind up in a UF series with zombies.

Unknown said...

Really great interview! My weapon of choice would probably be 100% silver stilettos, they are nice and easy to hide in a coat, if done right.

Oh, I think my weapon of choice would be a crossbow with poisoned arrows that only I have the antidote to.

Candace said...

A miniature unicorn?!! I would read it just for that!

Hmm, a weapon...while I would absolutely love to say something cool like a sword or a dagger or something, I doubt I'd be any good with either. Maybe a crossbow, so that I can be far away if I have to use it :D

Actually, does magic count? I would TOTALLY use magic as a weapon if absolutely necessary.
