Some news...

It looks like SHADOWS BEFORE THE SUN will, indeed, be the last Charlie Madigan novel to be released by my publisher (though they are releasing a short story this summer--woo! More on that awesomeness in a sec).

The books have been incredibly well received, and I'm so proud of that. That was the primary job I set out to do. I appreciate everyone who took the time to write to me, to talk about the books, to promote them, and write about them on Amazon and Goodreads, and blogs and elsewhere. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!

There is a wonderful silver lining in all this, folks, and I hope you'll stay with me and see it too. This decision does not mean the fate of Charlie & Co. has come to an irrevocable end. Obviously the way I left SHADOWS BEFORE THE SUN, there are things left undone. I cannot say, at this moment, when I will write more as I am working on what pays me and thus pays my bills. But I have other options, which I found I enjoy after getting my feet wet with EMBERS IN A DARK FROST. (Isn't the cover beautiful? I'm tickled to say that book, which I wrote as Kelly Keaton, hit the #1 Kindle Historical Fantasy Bestseller List last week.)

The good thing about Indie publishing is that we won't have the long wait between when a book is finished and when it is released, so when I do have the opportunity to write another Charlie, it should hit the market relatively soon after edits, proofing, etc.

A good plus and yet another silver lining of, yes, I'm saying it twice, awesomeness is that the CARNIEPUNK anthology will be out in July and therein you'll find a story about Emma and Rex. Very excited about this project, people! So, not an entire CM novel, but an emotional, action-packed installment in the CM world. And if you have liked my series, your support with CARNIEPUNK would be incredibly appreciated.

Once again, a big thanks to everyone for sticking with the series thus far. I have been so fortunate to have met so many wonderful readers, to have made lasting connections and friends, to have worked with an AH-MAZING editor and publisher.

I'm gonna keep keeping on...

*hugs* :-)

I loved this series and am glad you're consider the 'other' option. Can't wait for the next book! You rock!

Oh no :/ There was no end :/ Publishers never know a good thing when they have it

So sorry to hear this. I'm a big fan of your work. But I'm glad that Embers in a Dark Frost hit the top of the list so at least you have some good news in your day.

I'm gonna be honest, I'm a little sad that the publisher decided not to continue the CM series :(, but whenever you decide to write/publish the next CM book...your fans will be the first in line to buy the book!

Thanks for writing this update, and congrats on Embers hitting #1! will a print version be available any time sooner?

I'm not worried, Kelly... your world-building is too phenomenal for readers to leave you alone, and when the time is right for Charlie & Co. to rear their heads, they will.

You have a loyal fan in me, and that isn't going to change, even if your publisher does.

I REALLY hate when publishers make these decisions!! I love Charlie and Co, and am so grateful you are open to indie publishing! CE Murphy wanted to publish a novella for her Walker Papers series and had such a successful Kickstarter campaign that it turned into a book! Not sure if you're open to that, but Kickstarter is a great resource!

I love your books and can't wait for to see what comes next!! XOXO

Too bad, I really enjoy the Charlie Madigan series. Will watch for future updates. Didn't know you also wrote YA--just put the Embers book on my to-read list.

LOL, Kelly. Yeah... So glad for our talks in NOLA. We must meet up again! You know RT is in NOLA in 2014... :D Thanks for the hugs!!!

Wow. These comments are so nice. Thank you all, each and every one of you, for the words. Can't tell you how much they mean. Totally made my day!! *BIG HUGS*

It is sad and disappointing. It just came down to numbers, and my publisher made a business decision, a sound one when you look at it from a financial standpoint. I just wish I could lay a finger on WHY they didn't sell as well as they should have.

NOoooOOOOOoooo!

I love that series so hard! I still haven't figured out how to get Hank out of those books and into my house. ;) Plus, I still want a hellhound because of you (my dogs are pointing their paws at you and blaming you... just sayin'... lol). Oh seriously... if they get picked up again, do let us know! As you can see there are a lot of fans of that series!

Btw, can't wait to dive into Embers...

I've enjoyed the series and I'll be watching for more books, however you publish them. :D

NOOOOOOOO!

That is IT! No other authors named Kelly are allowed to write series I love. Because pubs keep discontinuing my favorite authors named KELLY!!!

dammitdammitdammit

I will be waiting with baited breathe for you to write another Charlie novel. I adore that series and will be going through Hank withdrawals until then. I reposted my feature Read This F@!%ing Book that was on the Charlie series and will continue to spread the word about what a great UF series this is. :)

I hope there is a swift resolution for you in finding a new publisher. Charlie and company have become my literary friends and I would miss then terribly if they went away. hoping and praying.

I am absolutely devastated and quite frankly shocked that your publisher could drop this series. I find it hard to believe that the numbers didn't add up. This is one of my top 5 series and I read a TON of books. I definitely spend way more than I should on them. Now I know why I haven't been able to pre-order the next Charlie Madigan book for my kindle.

Please, please do a Kickstarter project because I refuse to believe another Charlie Madigan book isn't on its way... Puppy dog eyes. You would just need to spread the word. If you need design help... I am an art director and would be happy to help if it would help Charlie continue her adventure.

P.S. I feel like I sound like a total creeper, but I'm definitely sincere in my offer of help. Wishing you all the best!

I rarely post on blogs. I think this is only my third time-I am a lurker normally, but just wanted to say how sad I am to hear this. I read lots of UF and really love your books. They are some of the best IMHO. You are up there with Patricia Briggs, Ilona Andrews and Kelley Armstrong as far as I'm concerned. I would buy your books if they were self published for sure. Thanks for the stories.

Kelly said...

Thank you guys!! *hugs* The support is awesome and I'm so grateful. I'll look into kick start for sure since two of you have mentioned it now... Off to investigate! More to come... ;)

You know how much I love this series, so I'm sad, but yet, hopeful, because of the possibilities. I so well know the "writing what pays the bills", which is why I'm still writing nonfiction for now. I follow you on facebook so I know I'll always find out what you are up to:)

I'm so sad to hear they've decided not to pick up any more CM books, but please know that when there is another one, I'll be buying it. My son loves them, too. Just the other day he asked when the next one was coming out.

Can't wait to read Carniepunk and Embers!

Melissa (My World...in words and pages) said...

No way! Wow. That's a shame! Sounds like more and more books I'm loving the publishers are dropping. *sigh* There loss. Kelly, best of luck to you. I love Charlie & co. and look forward to all you come out with in self publishing. :)

I did preorder Carniepunk already, so glad I did. And I need to get to your series as Kelly Keaton yet.

Best of luck with all!

If you have the rights to indie publish your CM series, do it! Investigate the self publishing industry and go the route that works best for you. Many self pubbed authors I've met make far more money than they ever did with NY publishing and you already have a huge fan base - myself included. Best of luck!

JustWingingIt said...

Well...rats. I just recently discovered this series and plowed through all four books in as many days. I was so looking forward to getting more books so I really hope you decide to go the indie publishing route to give us more of Charlie and co. In the meantime, I'me really looking forward to Carniepunk since I absolutely ADORE Rex.

So glad I found this post. I've been stalking you on both Goodreads and Twitter in hopes that you would have good news regarding this series. I can't believe the numbers weren't there... this was one of my absolute favorite urban fantasy series.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that you decide to keep this series going by way of self publishing.

How is it that a phenomenally unique and imo fantastic series as your's Kelly is being dropped and there'a drivel(I won't mention by name) going strong after 18+ books. I just don't get it.

Anyway you continue to write CM I'll continue to follow, it's too good a series to miss.

Awesome news! I'm looking forward to the next installment in Charlie's journeys. There definitely needs to be a continuation of this series - it's one of the few I'm looking forward to (yes, my ego really is so big as to continue the series based just on my taking interest in it :D)

Kelly said...

*hugs*!!!! :) Thanks so much.

Auburnchick said...

Oh NO! I can't believe the publisher is not continuing this series. Like other folks wrote, this has been one of my very *favorite* series in the market right now.

Wishing you best of luck on the self publishing route - a bit selfishly, I guess since I want more of this series. Rest assured you have fans who will support you.

Never written a comment anywhere, normally I'm just a silent follower... but I'm so sorry about the publisher's decision! I love the wordlbuilding and the characters, they're amazing and unique. It's one of my favorite series in line with Ilona Andrews and Patricia Briggs. I would and will buy the next book in a heartbeat - please, don't give up!

Best wishes from a fan from Germany

Well I don't know why they didn't sell well- they are AWESOME books that *I* for one truly enjoy!
I'll wait patiently until you get the next one out there somehow :/

I have what I call my Instant Buy List, and on that list is a bunch of authors whose books I never, ever fail to click the Buy button for. These are the authors where I know I don't even need to read the synopsis for the next book; I just pre-order as soon as I can, or pick them up in a book shop the day they're released.

It's a pretty exclusive list. There's only a small number of authors whose books I genuinely look forward to with excitement and anticipation, because I know I'm always going to get my money's worth from them. Their works are consistently strong, the books written with genuine talent and skill, the stories enthralling and rich.

Kim Harrison, Meljean Brook, Anne Bishop, Seanan McGuire, Kristen Callihan, Suzanne McLeod, Darynda Jones, Lindsey Buroker... and Kelly Gay.

I discovered your Charlie Madigan books about two years ago, during a period of serious disillusionment when it came to finding a good read to immerse myself in. I was so tired of reading cookie-cutter novels with unimaginative plots and 2D characters, stories with no life to them and romances with no substance. I devoured your books in a matter of days and thought to myself, "Finally!"

Less and less I'm finding that eureka moment, where I genuinely feel I've found a book or a series of books that I can get lost in, that can feed my addiction, and your series was one of very few I've stumbled across in the last few years.

I don't like to be a book snob, and I don't like it when people insist on being book snobs, but on occasion I do despair when a genre or a particular market is completely overlooked because they don't know any better than the mediocre offerings placed in front of them. It's only when I see authors such as yourself becoming increasingly under-appreciated that it starts to bother me.

I hope you don't abandon this series, because I would hate to see that happen when your novels are geniunely well-crafted and well-loved, however small those "numbers" may be.

If you want evidence that indie publishing is sometimes the best course of action for an author, you only have to read up on Susan Ee and Lindsey Buroker.

At least you know, should you ever go down that route, you have a steady, loyal fanbase waiting to snatch up any books you publish in the future. You can count me among them.

I'll be one of those checking frequently to find your independent publishing date. I love that series and own every book in it.

Thanks for the continuing support you guys, and for taking the time out of your day to write. Your messages mean the world--they really, really do. You all are awesome. :D I'm so ready to start the self pub journey with Charlie. More to come on that in the next few weeks!! *hugs*

I just finished book four. It was really amazing. Couldn't put it down without feeling withdrawal symptoms. You cannot believe the pity party I'm throwing myself now that I've realized the publishers are not continuing the series (serious mistake!). Good luck on your future endeavors. Will stay tune for your future works and hopefully a little more of charlie:)

I have read and re-read this series so many times, I will follow Charlie whoever she goes.

Wow, just found this post today, was wondering when the next Charlie Madigan book was coming.

I'm really sad, but as an author too (non-fiction) I totally know how it goes. Look forward to future indie publications, and glad Charlie will live on in some form. Really enjoy the world you've built and the people in it.

It sounds like it is time to search for different publishing options. You could think about self-publishing. You will land on your feet after all of this is said and done. Don’t worry your fans will see you through.

I hope you can get more of the series written, and will wait patiently. Even if it is self published and not professionally edited and packaged, a POD/ebook would be awesome.
